Development of the Oolloo Water Allocation Plan has commenced

The development of a Water Allocation Plan for the Oolloo Aquifer is now well underway. A water allocation plan is a tool used to establish a framework for sharing water between human and environmental needs. The aim of the Oolloo Aquifer Water Allocation Plan is to provide for sustainable agriculture and industry development whilst maintaining the unique ecosystems, indigenous cultural values and recreational opportunities provided by the Daly River.

The Oolloo aquifer is the uppermost formation of the Daly Groundwater Basin. It is a largely unconfined, fractured and cavernous aquifer system that receives good recharge and has a moderate success rate for high yielding bores. Water discharging from the Oolloo aquifer keeps the Daly River flowing throughout the dry season.

Development pressure in the Daly region is steadily increasing and it is important that a comprehensive planning process is undertaken now to protect environmental and cultural values and secure ongoing access to water for irrigation into the future. The planning process will use the best available science and consider proposed agricultural development, environmental flow requirements and climate variability to determine water availability from Oolloo aquifer.

The Daly River Management Advisory Committee (DRMAC) is the advisory committee for the development of this Plan. They will bring the views of various stakeholder groups to the forefront during this planning process and will work with NRETAS to ensure the community has opportunities to contribute throughout the development of the Plan.
